BLOOMINGTON - Joey Gillespie scored twice as part of a four-goal second period for St. Cloud Cathedral in its 4-2 triumph over Northfield on Friday in a clash of top-10 Class 1A teams at the Bloomington Ice Garden.
No. 3-1A St. Cloud Cathedral (15-4-1) took over in the second period after a scoreless first. The Crusaders' top line of Gillespie, John Hirschfeld and Andrew Dwinnell accounted for all four unanswered goals en route to a 4-0 lead.
No. 8-1A Northfield (13-2-2) rallied in the third on a pair of Kam Kaiser goals.
LAKEVILLE - Brayden Olsen's power-play goal midway through the third period lifted No. 17-2A Lakeville South past Lakeville North 1-0 at Ames Arena in the continuation of one of the state's fiercest rivalries.
Lakeville South's (12-6-0) Carson Hauger made 20 saves to earn the shutout. Lakeville North's (6-14-0) Van Eigner stopped 29 of 30 shots.
The teams have played for the Section 1AA championship each of the last three years and in seven of the last eight seasons. South has won five straight section championships.
HERMANTOWN - Cody Niesen stopped all 33 shots he faced as St. Thomas Academy beat Hermantown 3-0 at Hermantown Arena.
Jimmy Zavoral and Gus Olson scored second-period goals for the No. 7-2A Tommies (12-5-2), who beat Hermantown by an identical 3-0 score last season in Mendota Heights.
Dane Callaway made 27 saves for No. 2-1A Hermantown (12-5-2), which has lost five or more games for the first time since the 2017-18 season.
BEMIDJI - Junior forward Briggs Knott scored the final two goals for Bemidji as it rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 4-2 at the Bemidji Community Arena.
No. 12-1A Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (10-9-1) led 2-0 after the first period on goals from Karson Young and Joseph Antonutti.
Dominic Arndt, Peyton Neadeau and Knott scored in the second period as Bemidji (5-10-2) took a 3-2 lead.
Knott scored his team-leading ninth goal of the in the third period.
GRAND RAPIDS - Senior defenseman Bauer Murphy's goal with 1:46 remaining proved to be the game winner as Grand Rapids upended Maple Grove 3-2 at Yanmar Arena.
Murphy's goal, his 11th of the season, put the unranked Thunderhawks (11-9-0) ahead 3-1.
No. 5-2A Maple Grove (12-5-0) got a goal from David Kukkonen with 1:14 left to cap the scoring. The Crimson outshot the Thunderhawks 30-20.
