STILLWATER - Ryan Lund scored 3:38 into overtime to lift Warroad past Mahtomedi 7-6 at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center on Saturday in a rematch of last season's state Class 1A championship game.
Mahtomedi won its first state title last March when it beat Warroad 6-5 in double overtime at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul in one of the most exciting state championship games in recent history.
The rematch was a thriller, too, with multiple lead changes and a hat trick for a player from each team, just like in the state title game.
This time it was senior forward Patrick Egan scoring four goals for No. 4-1A Mahtomedi (1-3-0) and Lund, a senior defenseman, scoring four for No. 2-1A Warroad (3-1-0).
Lund scored the winner when he one-timed a pass from Murray Marvin-Cordes past Mahtomedi goaltender West Strub.
EDINA - Caleb Koskie's second-period goal proved to be the game-winner as Benilde-St. Margaret's beat Edina 3-1 in a penalty-filled matchup with section seeding implications at Braemar Arena.
Koskie's goal was the only one that didn't come on a power play, as the teams combined for 21 infractions for 58 minutes.
Mason Stenger scored a power-play goal for No. 12-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's (2-0-0) in the first and Benjamin Norris' power-play goal midway through the second put the Red Knights ahead 3-0.
Mason West scored a power-play goal for Edina (3-1-0) with 21 seconds left.
The game marked the lone regular-season meeting between the teams and will be part of the consideration when Section 6AA coaches determine the playoff pecking order at the end of the season.
ST. CLOUD - Joey Gillespie's hat trick allowed St. Cloud Cathedral to rally from an early deficit in a 5-2 victory over East Grand Forks at the Municipal Athletic Complex.
Gillespie, a junior forward, scored the only two goals of the second period and added another midway through the third as the No. 6-1A Crusaders (3-0-1) scored four unanswered goals to cruise past the No. 3-1A Green Wave (4-1-0).
PLYMOUTH - Rhys Wallin scored twice and recorded two assists while Brittan Alstetad had a goal and three assists as Wayzata toppled Duluth East 6-0 at the Plymouth Ice Center.
Luke Miller also had two goals for the No. 4-2A Trojans (3-0-0).
Wayzata outshot No. 16-2A Duluth East, 34-11.
MINNETONKA - Alex Lunski, Javon Moore and Luke Garry each had a goal and two assists as Minnetonka continued its early season domination by beating Eastview 6-0 at the Pagel Activity Center.
No. 1-2A Minnetonka has won all four of its games by running-time margins (six or more goals). The Skippers (4-0-0) have shut out their last three opponents.
Minnetonka outshot Eastview (2-2-0) by a 51-5 margin.
BRAINERD - Gavin Jensen scored three goals and added two assists as Roseau continued its hot start to the season by beating Brainerd 6-4 at Essentia Health Sports Center.
Jensen, a senior, scored a goal in each period for the No. 20-2A Rams (3-0-0). His empty net goal with 1:28 remaining completed the scoring and halted a run of three straight third-period goals for the Warriors (0-2-1).
Jensen is tied for seventh in the state with 12 points, one behind linemate Noah Urness, who had a goal and an assist in the victory.
